How to Support Siblings of Children with Autism

December 5, 2025

Fostering Understanding, Connection, and Balance Within the Family

Growing up with a sibling who has autism can be both rewarding and challenging. Siblings often become natural helpers and advocates, but they may also experience feelings of confusion, frustration, or even guilt as they navigate their family’s unique dynamics. With understanding and open communication, parents can help all children feel valued, supported, and included.

Acknowledge Their Feelings

Siblings may sometimes feel overlooked when much attention is focused on their brother or sister’s needs. Encourage open, judgment-free conversations where they can share their thoughts and emotions. Simple questions like, “What’s been hard for you this week?” or “What questions do you have about autism?” can go a long way in helping them feel heard.

Provide Age-Appropriate Information

Children understand autism best when it’s explained in terms they can relate to. Use simple, honest language to describe how their sibling experiences the world, such as being more sensitive to sounds or needing extra time to communicate. As they grow older, offer more detail so their understanding matures alongside their empathy.

Create Individual Time and Attention

Setting aside dedicated one-on-one time with each child shows them that they matter equally. This doesn’t have to be elaborate.  It can be as simple as reading a bedtime story together, going for a walk, or having a “special night” where they choose an activity. Individual attention helps strengthen each parent-child relationship and reduces resentment.

Encourage Shared Play and Positive Interaction

Look for activities both siblings can enjoy together, such as drawing, building blocks, or outdoor play. Encourage cooperative play that promotes teamwork rather than competition. Celebrate moments of kindness and connection between siblings to reinforce positive interactions and strengthen their bond.

Connect With Other Families

Joining sibling support groups or autism-friendly family events can remind children they’re not alone in their experiences. Meeting others who understand similar challenges can help them feel seen, supported, and proud of their family dynamic.
